Railroad Trains for the Soul: New Jersey Commuter Trains

Jumping across the nation from California, we're looking at yet another early commuter paint scheme from the New Jersey Department of Transportation. It was colored blue and silver with the NJDOT logo. Some locomotives, like the former Pennsylvania Railroad E8 shown, had the state symbol on the front. Other diesels, including the EMD GP40P (former Jersey Central Railroad units) and the GE U34CH, were also painted in the same livery. The latter type, however, featured the Erie-Lackawanna logos because it was assigned to operate on the former E-L routes. The NJDOT paint scheme was considered to be the livery before the New Jersey Transit got its name by 1983.
