Railroad Trains for the Soul: EMDX No. 91 With Tier 4 Engine
As a companion to the SD89MAC photos, here’s one that shows the EMD SD90MAC-H Phase II demonstrator No. 91 fitted with the prototype of what became the Tier 4-compliant, 12-cylinder 1010J freight engine. As you can see, the engine compartment was rebuilt as a standard hood unit design as opposed to the cowl body on No. 92. However, the hood on this unit contrasts with the production design on the SD70ACe-T4, which is normal for engineering locomotives. Despite its mechanical problems, the 265H became the inspiration for EMD’s next generation of fuel-efficient, four-cycle diesel engines in an effort to meet the Tier 4 emissions standards. It’s fascinating to see some craftsmanship behind these modern locomotives.
