Railroad Trains for the Soul: California Commuter Trains
Let's visit Northern California and see an experimental Caltrain paint scheme with a tri-color rainbow in the middle. Like many historical freight railroads, the Southern Pacific provided both intercity and commuter passenger trains to and from major cities like the San Francisco Bay Area. In the early 1980's, Caltrain was created by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) to revitalize public transit for the same region. The agency initially used some existing SP equipment and painted them in the early "Rainbow" livery. While Caltrain already got its name, this unusual paint scheme only lasted between 1982 and 1985. Afterwards, the agency received its fleet of EMD F40PH locomotives and Nippon Sharyo bi-level Gallery coaches, which were delivered in newer Caltrain logos.
