Railroad Trains for the Soul: EMD SD60
The SD60 is Electro-Motive's first six-axle locomotive powered by the two-cycle 710G diesel engine and the first to feature onboard microprocessor controls. Rated at 3,800 horsepower, the SD60 was introduced in response to the mechanical problems found in the 3,600-hp SD50 as the 645F engine went up to its maximum power limit. While the SD50 was the last locomotive model with the 645 prime mover, the last successful model with it was the 3,000-hp SD40-2. The SD60 also became available with the optional wide-nose comfort cab, which led to the designation SD60M.
Here are three of my favorite SD60 videos. The first is Electro-Motive's promo video that focuses on the main characteristics of this locomotive. The other two are the C Vision previews featuring trains led by the same type, including variants such as the wide-cab SD60M, the Canadian cowl-bodied SD60F, and Norfolk Southern's rebuilt "Crescent Cab" SD60E. It's good to see these locomotives that are forerunners to more powerful and advanced models equipped with the 710 prime mover.
