GE Standard Cabs & Cowls DVD's
Those DVD's you're looking at are another awesome DVD's from C. Vision Productions. It's the GE Standard Cabs & Cowls series. The DVD's represent aging narrow-nose and full-width, cowl-bodied diesel locomotives built by General Electric, all of which were superseded by the new wide-nose North American safety cab road switcher diesels. There are two volumes of this series. Among the featured GE locomotives are the six-axle diesels, including narrow-nose Dash 8-40C's from CSX, Norfolk Southern, Union Pacific and Canadian National; narrow-nose Dash 9-40C's also from Norfolk Southern; and cowl-bodied Dash 8-40CM's from Canadian National and the British Columbia Railway (BC Rail). There are also four-axle versions, including Dash 8-40B's from BNSF, and Dash 8-39B's from two shortline railroads: Minnesota Commercial and Nashville & Eastern. Additionally, there's some bonus 1990's footage covering C40-8's from the Chicago & North Western, B39-8's from a leasing company called LMX, and even B40-8's from the Santa Fe. All of the former CNW Dash 8's were sold to Canadian National by Union Pacific while some of the former LMX Dash 8's were sold to the shortlines. Perhaps my favorite GE loco featured in the DVD's is the C40-8M. Full-width carbody diesels were common sights on road freight service in the early diesel period. There were two other known GE cowl units: the Santa Fe U30CG and the Amtrak P30CH. Unfortunately, to my knowledge, all examples of both cowls were scrapped, so the C40-8M appears to be the only surviving GE cowl model. It is also the only GE cowl model ordered by more than one railroad. While the C40-8M does have a wide-nose Canadian comfort cab, the fully enclosed body simply sets this locomotive apart from any GE widecab. Overall, these shows represent the memories of standard cab diesels that you can enjoy when you're bored of the widecabs used today on most freight trains. If you are interested in purchasing GE Standard Cabs & Cowls, both DVD's retail for $19.95 each. Please note that both are sold separately, not as a set. My suggestion is to contact C. Vision Productions, although you can find some of these in hobby shops. You can visit them on the web at http://www.cvptrains.com/ or give them a call at 763-577-1358 (toll-free: 1-888-TAPE-CVP).
